So, I'm checking on my garden the other day (as I often do), just poking around to see what I can see. My garden this year has been a huge success compared to last year. Last year (my first year), I learned the importance of a reliable watering system. You may guess how that garden ended. This year, my garden has had *plenty* of water. So much so that this year's gardening lesson was in the art of spacing plants. Take a gander at how my tomatoes have suffocated pretty much everything else in my garden. Apparently 11 tomato plants 12" apart was too close. (There are carrots, jalepenos and former lettuce plants all underneath the tomato canopy. It's like a mini-rainforest. )
Anyhoo, that's not what this post is about. This post is about my cucumbers. Yes, I planted some yummy cucumber seeds in the special "vine" section of my garden. I was a little concerned when the cucumbers didn't come up the same way the neighboring squash came through, but about 3 weeks later I started to see some growth and put my fears to rest.
Well, the squash have come and gone (yum), and now the cucumber plant finally has some flowers on it! So, I check now and again to see if any new little cucumber children are growing. Up until the other day the answer was, "no", and now that I have seen what I have seen the answer is still "no" because guess what? This is what I found growing on my cucumber plant:
Lest your eyes deceive you, that is a WATERMELON. Surprise! I know, right? I was a little confused myself. I didn't plant watermelon this year. I did, however, plant watermelon in that spot last year. I'm a little unclear on the "how" of all this, but apparently we are in for another season of watermelon. Yay! In other news, Eliza celebrated her 6th birthday today with a few friends. Pool party and cupcakes. Very low-key.
